Flying over St. Demetrius Cemetery...

St. Demetrius Cemetery is located in the abandoned village Ukraina, North Dakota, USA. This site is part of the Ukrainian community that settled in the region at the end of the 19th century. Ukrainian immigrants, primarily from Galicia and Bukovina, established the parish of St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church and built a church, which still stands today on Highway 85. The cemetery is the former church grounds tells the story of a people who, despite the challenges of immigrant life, remained deeply connected to their roots. The headstones, many of which are inscribed in Cyrillic and decorated with traditional Ukrainian symbols, speak to a proud heritage. They mark the final resting place of pioneers who built lives from the prairie soil, preserving their customs and language in the heart of America.

Today, St. Demetrius Cemetery is more than just a burial site—it is a living monument to the resilience, faith, and perseverance of the Ukrainian-American community. It stands as a sacred space where descendants return to honor their ancestors, celebrate their heritage, and pass on stories of sacrifice and strength to future generations.

The cemetery continues to be a powerful symbol of cultural preservation, reminding all who visit of the enduring legacy of those who came before.
